PRACTICAL GUIDE

What does payroll in Switzerland involve?

Swiss payroll starts from the agreed gross salary and applies both employee and employer contributions. The most common are old-age, disability and loss-of-earnings insurance (AHV/IV/EO), unemployment insurance (ALV), the occupational pension or second pillar (BVG) and accident insurance (UVG). Depending on the contract, daily sickness benefit insurance (KTG), family allowances (Familienzulagen) and, for certain foreign nationals, withholding tax (Quellensteuer) may also apply.

Bases, rates and ceilings change over time and may depend on the canton, the collective labour agreement and the terms of each insurance policy. That is why we always work with confirmed data and your company’s current rules.

How we support you each month

  • Collecting changes: new starters, leavers, salary changes, hours and approved variable pay.
  • Reviewing absences due to illness, accident, maternity or military service and the related compensation.
  • Coordinating with your payroll software or current provider.
  • Checking discrepancies before processing and logging corrections.
  • Preparing the documentation for your review and approval.

Year-end close and deadlines

At year end, a salary certificate (Lohnausweis) is issued for each employee, and total salaries are reported to the AHV compensation fund, the accident insurer and the pension fund. If any employees are subject to withholding tax, it is settled with the relevant canton. We help you prepare these steps in advance to avoid a rush in January.

What we do not do

We do not replace the legal validation of the rules used in the calculation, nor do we promise results that depend on data outside our control. Each party’s responsibilities — who calculates, who reviews and who approves — are agreed in writing before we begin.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Which payroll software does Mija work with?

We adapt to the software your company already uses, such as Abacus, bexio or SwissSalary, or help you prepare the data for your external payroll provider.

What is withholding tax (Quellensteuer)?

It is an income tax that the employer deducts directly from the salary of certain foreign nationals who do not hold a C settlement permit, and pays over to the canton. The rules and rates depend on the canton and on personal circumstances.

What is a salary certificate (Lohnausweis)?

It is the annual document the employer gives each employee, showing their salary and benefits for the year. It is used for the tax return and follows an official form.

Can you also handle the 13th-month salary and bonuses?

Yes, as part of preparing variable pay. We check what each contract stipulates and how it should be reflected in the relevant pay period.
